NATO Marks Milestone with Successful NATO AWACS–MRTT Air-to-Air Refueling Airworthiness Certification

NATO proudly announces the successful Airworthiness Certification of air-to-air refueling operations between its BOEING based Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) E-3A and the AIRBUS based Multinational Multi-Role Tanker Transport A330MRTT aircraft. This achievement marks a critical leap forward in enhancing the Alliance’s strategic flexibility, interoperability, and operational reach.

Conducted under the coordination of NAPMA, NAEW&C Force Headquarters and NSPA, with the support of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) Flight Test Centre, Multinational MRTT Unit (MMU), European Air Transport Command (EATC) and Air Refueling Certification Agency (ARCA) the test flights successfully demonstrated mid-air fuel transfer procedures between the NATO E-3A AWACS and the A330MRTT (KC-30M) tanker aircraft, operated by the MMU.

These missions validated the technical compatibility and operational readiness of the two aircraft systems, enabling future rapid deployments and sustained aerial surveillance missions across the Alliance’s area of responsibility.

This milestone reflects the strength of NATO collaboration and the continued modernization of our capabilities. By linking the AWACS and MRTT platforms, we are future-proofing NATO’s ability to project airpower and maintain vigilance wherever it is needed.

The successful qualification highlights extensive cross-national cooperation, with contributions from NATO member states involved in both the AWACS Programme and the MRTT Fleet Initiative. It ensures the Alliance’s high-readiness forces are better equipped to respond to evolving challenges, with extended time-on-station for surveillance assets and enhanced logistical support.

This achievement is a testament to NATO’s commitment to innovation, interoperability, and collective defense.
